Mouse droppings and mold force closure of Café Theatro
The Bremen food safety authority, LMTVet, has shuttered Café Theatro in the city’s “Viertel” district following a mid-March inspection that exposed severe hygienic failures.
Pest activity in food preparation zones
During the surprise visit, inspectors found evidence of a pervasive rodent problem. The official report documents mouse droppings on kitchen work surfaces, near food storage containers, on napkins, and even on cutlery. Officials noted the severity was compounded by the fact that staff had been working in the kitchen for around two and a half hours prior to their arrival, yet had taken no steps to clean or mitigate the infestation.

Management was not blindsided by the pests. The LMTVet report confirms the establishment had long been aware of the infestation. Despite having a professional pest control service under contract, the agency found that necessary interventions were either poorly executed or entirely neglected.
Widespread mold and spoiled inventory
The facility’s failures extended well beyond pests. Inspectors discovered large-scale mold growth throughout the kitchen, specifically inside the daily cooling room. Further contamination was identified in the bar area, the beverage cooling unit, the cake display case, and on air exhaust vents.

The audit also uncovered spoiled food intended for customer consumption. Inspectors seized scallops that emitted a “strongly acidic-pungent smell of spoilage.” They also ordered the destruction of a container of artichokes that showed “clearly visible bubble formation.”
Regulatory enforcement after decades of operation
Café Theatro has operated in Bremen since 1997. However, the LMTVet is legally mandated to disclose inspection reports when establishments exhibit such severe hygiene deficiencies.
