Throughout his minor league career, Berroa has consistently demonstrated impressive stolen base numbers, averaging around 50 steals annually. He’s capable of playing all three outfield positions, offering manager Pat Murphy valuable flexibility. While his offensive production has been inconsistent,recent trends suggest improvement. From 2021 to 2023, he maintained a .241/.350/.391 batting line with a 108 wRC+ in the minors, showcasing a good eye at the plate (13.7% walk rate) despite a relatively high strikeout rate (25.3%).
Last year, Berroa showed encouraging signs of refining his approach. He lowered his strikeout percentage to 23.7% while maintaining a solid walk rate of 11.7%. This translated to a .281/.371/.454 line and a 120 wRC+ in 79 Triple-A games. His major league stint with Toronto, though brief, revealed a high walk rate (17.8%) but also a significant strikeout rate (31.1%), resulting in a .189/.333/.216 slash line. He did manage to steal six bases in eight attempts, highlighting his continued threat on the basepaths.
This season, Berroa experienced a slow start in the Blue Jays’ system but rebounded effectively with the Dodgers, though his success was partially inflated by a high batting average on balls in play (.403). he’s hitting .270/.358/.345 with a 90 wRC+ and 20 stolen bases at Triple-A this year. He was recently placed on the injured list with a shoulder issue, which prompted the move.
The Brewers value Berroa’s ability to be optioned to the minors, providing them with crucial roster flexibility. He projects as a fourth outfielder capable of pinch-running and defensive replacement duties. While his bat is unpredictable, it possesses the potential to contribute positively. Ramírez’s Struggles Lead to Release
To create roster space for Berroa, the Brewers have designated right-handed reliever Jhoan Ramírez for assignment. Ramírez, signed in January after a prosperous 2024 season in Japan where he posted a remarkable 1.80 ERA, has struggled to replicate that success in Milwaukee.
In 18 2/3 innings pitched for the Brewers, Ramírez has an ERA of 8.68. While his strikeout (20.2%) and walk (8.3%) rates are respectable, he has surrendered seven home runs in that limited sample size.His performance at Triple-A hasn’t been much better, with a 4.25 ERA over 29 2/3 innings. This contrasts sharply with his dominant performance in the NPB, where he recorded 61 strikeouts in 60 innings.
