Broncos Host National Champion WR Omar Cooper Jr. In Potential Draft Pursuit
The Denver Broncos are evaluating potential wide receiver additions through the 2026 NFL Draft, and have hosted Indiana Hoosiers receiver Omar Cooper Jr. For a top-30 visit on Friday, signaling significant interest in the national champion as a potential weapon for quarterback Bo Nix.
Broncos Prioritize Receiver Depth
Thus far in free agency, the Broncos have focused on developing their existing receiver corps and retaining tight end talent. But, January’s AFC Championship loss – where injuries to Troy Franklin and Pat Bryant were impactful – highlighted a need for greater depth at the wide receiver position. The team has invested heavily in young receivers in recent years, with Marvin Mims Jr., Troy Franklin, and Pat Bryant all being key draft picks over the last three offseasons.
Omar Cooper Jr.: A Versatile Receiving Threat
Cooper enjoyed a breakout season in 2025, contributing to Indiana’s national championship run with 69 receptions for 937 yards and 13 touchdowns, playing alongside projected No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza. Prior to that, in 2024, he averaged 21.2 yards per catch, leading the Big Ten conference. He has demonstrated the ability to excel in multiple roles, having previously played primarily as an outside receiver, accumulating 594 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024.
Fit with Sean Payton’s Offense
Cooper’s receiving profile is considered conducive to Sean Payton’s offensive scheme. He is described as a serious yards-after-catch threat who excels in the middle of the field. At the NFL Combine in February, Cooper recorded a 40-yard dash time of 4.42 seconds and a 10-yard split of 1.55 seconds. Draft evaluators generally rank him as one of the top four wide receivers in the 2026 draft class.
Draft Outlook and Competition
The Broncos currently hold the 30th overall pick in the first round of the draft. Cooper is also scheduled to visit with the Dallas Cowboys, and is expected to meet with other teams as well. Pro Football Focus currently ranks 15 receivers within the top 100 prospects in this year’s draft, indicating a dynamic market for pass-catchers.
Denver’s second known top-30 visit has been with Mizzou defensive lineman Chris McClellan.
