Bulgaria’s Security Council Meets Amidst Middle East Escalation
Sofia, Bulgaria – Prime Minister Andrei Gyurov convened the Bulgarian Security Council on Saturday, February 28, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. Local time to discuss the rapidly evolving situation in the Middle East, following reports of military actions between Israel and Iran.
No Direct Threat to Bulgaria, Increased Vigilance Advised
According to Bulgarian authorities, there is currently no direct threat to the country. However, Acting Minister of Defense Atanas Zapryanov emphasized the demand for heightened vigilance regarding potential activation of terrorist cells as reported by Fakti.bg.
“Bulgaria is not a part and is not a party at all in carrying out such an operation in Iran. We will not bring the military forces to a higher level of readiness,” Zapryanov stated. He is awaiting a response from Tehran, anticipating it could further escalate tensions in the region.
Evacuation Plans and U.S. Military Presence
The Security Council meeting will also address potential evacuation plans for Bulgarian citizens in the region, given the presence of Bulgarian diplomatic representations in the Middle East. Discussions will include the status of U.S. Armed forces stationed in Bulgaria, specifically at Novo Selo and the Sofia airport.
Zapryanov confirmed that the American aircraft at Sofia airport are not involved in the current operation and stated that no new NATO forces are expected to be deployed to Bulgaria .
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has already activated its situation center to continuously monitor developments.
Interior Ministry Enhances Security Measures
Acting Minister of the Interior Emil Dechev announced that the Ministry of the Interior has implemented necessary security measures. Currently, there is no information indicating a threat to Bulgaria .
Caretaker Government in Place
Andrey Gyurov assumed the role of Prime Minister of Bulgaria on February 19, 2026, leading a caretaker government pending the upcoming parliamentary election as noted by Wikipedia.
