ByteDance’s Volcano Engine Powers CCTV Spring Festival Gala with AI Cloud Technology

China’s Spring Festival Gala, a nationally televised spectacle akin to the Super Bowl in the United States, is increasingly becoming a showcase for the nation’s technological prowess. This year, ByteDance’s cloud computing unit, Volcano Engine, has secured an “exclusive AI cloud partnership” with China Central Television (CCTV) for the 2026 Gala, taking over from Alibaba Cloud as reported by the South China Morning Post.

AI at the Heart of the Gala

Volcano Engine’s role extends beyond simple cloud support. The partnership, built on “cutting-edge multimodal large models and cloud computing technologies,” will be pivotal in broadcasting, online interactions, and live video streaming of the event according to the SCMP. This signifies ByteDance’s ambition to establish Volcano Engine as a national-scale AI platform.

Showcasing AI Capabilities: Seedance 2.0 and Doubao

ByteDance is leveraging the Gala to demonstrate its advancements in artificial intelligence. Prior to the event, the company unveiled Seedance 2.0, a video-generation model that has garnered global attention, and released updated Doubao-Seed 2.0 series models as highlighted by CCTV Plus. The company plans to distribute over 100,000 tech products, including drones, electric vehicles, robots, and 3D printers, alongside digital red envelopes worth up to 8,888 yuan (US$1,286) through lucky draws during the broadcast.

Competition Heats Up in the AI Space

The Spring Festival Gala has grow a key battleground for China’s tech giants. Tencent’s Yuanbao and Alibaba’s Qwen AI apps have also launched giveaways totaling 1 billion yuan and 3 billion yuan, respectively, in cash and vouchers, modernizing the traditional practice of gifting lucky money as noted by the SCMP. Alibaba, excluded from the exclusive CCTV-ByteDance partnership, is sponsoring galas organized by local broadcasters in Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Henan.

Robotics Take Center Stage

Humanoid robots are expected to feature prominently in the Gala, building on the success of Unitree Robotics’ robots performing a Yangge folk dance at the 2025 event, which went viral according to the South China Morning Post. Unitree Robotics secured a partnership for the 2026 gala in a deal worth approximately 100 million yuan (US$14 million).

Volcano Engine’s Track Record and Future Growth

Volcano Engine has previously provided technical support for the CCTV Spring Festival Gala on Douyin since 2018, successfully managing 7.03 billion red envelope interactions during the 2021 Gala as stated on Aibase. The daily usage volume of the Douyin large model has exceeded 6.3 trillion Tokens, serving industries such as automotive, securities, banking, and education.

Tan Dai, president of Volcano Engine, reported extremely enthusiastic market response to their AI models, with users even utilizing translation software to learn how to employ the technology according to CCTV Plus.
