Central Florida Braces for Coldest Temperatures in Months, Rip Current Risk High

Orlando, FL – Central Florida residents are experiencing a significant drop in temperatures today, March 17, 2026, following the passage of a strong cold front. Temperatures have plummeted into the 40s inland, with wind chills making it feel even colder, and a high risk of life-threatening rip currents is impacting Atlantic beaches.

Temperature Drop and Wind Chill

Many inland areas woke up to temperatures in the 40s, with some locations north of Orlando dipping into the low 40s. When factoring in the wind, wind chills are ranging from the mid-30s to low 40s this morning. Despite sunshine expected later today, high temperatures will only reach the upper 50s to mid-60s – approximately 20 to 25 degrees colder than yesterday’s temperatures. The average high for this time of year is 79 degrees, making the current conditions well below normal.

Rainfall Totals and Dry Forecast

Radar estimates indicate that Central Florida received between two and four inches of rain over the past two days. The extended forecast remains dry, offering little immediate relief from the cold.

Continued Cold and Frost Advisory

The chilly pattern will persist tonight and into Wednesday morning, with overnight lows falling back into the 40s for most inland areas. Wind chills will again dip into the upper 30s in some locations. A frost advisory has been issued for central and western Marion County from 4 a.m. To 9 a.m. Wednesday, where patchy frost is possible.

Rip Current and Boating Hazards

Conditions at the beach are dangerous, particularly with spring break underway. There is a high risk of life-threatening rip currents along the Atlantic coast on Tuesday, and this risk is expected to remain elevated into Wednesday. Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water or only swim near a lifeguard. Boating conditions are also hazardous, with strong winds and elevated seas creating rough conditions, especially offshore.

Looking Ahead: Warming Trend

A gradual warming trend is expected later this week. Highs will return to the 70s by Thursday and Friday, and by the weekend, temperatures are forecast to reach the low to mid-80s with plenty of sunshine.
