Cesare Ruperto, Former Constitutional Court President, Dies at 100
Cesare Ruperto, a highly respected figure in Italian law and jurisprudence, has died in Rome at the age of 100. the former magistrate and president emeritus of the Constitutional Court passed away on February 7, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of distinguished service to the Italian legal system.
Born on may 28, 1925, in Philadelphia, a locality within Vibo Valentia, Ruperto concluded his career as a magistrate holding the position of president of a section within the Court of Cassation. His appointment as a judge of the Constitutional Court came on November 16, 1993, following a decision by the Supreme Court, and he was officially sworn in on December 3rd of the same year.
ruperto’s leadership extended to serving as president of the Constitutional Court from January 5, 2001, to December 2, 2002, marking the culmination of his mandate. beyond his work within the constitutional framework, Ruperto also played a pivotal role in Italian football history. In 2006, as the head of the federal appeals commission of the FIGC (Italian Football Federation), he delivered the initial verdict in the ‘calciopoli’ scandal, a major case of match-fixing that resulted in Juventus being relegated to Serie B.
His contributions where recently recognized at the national level,with President sergio Mattarella receiving him at the Quirinale Palace on May 28,2025,to commemorate his 100th birthday. This event underscored the high esteem in which Ruperto was held by the Italian state.
The funeral service will be held on Monday, February 9th, at 12:00 PM, at the Church of San Lorenzo in Lucina, located in the Piazza San Lorenzo in Lucina, Rome.
