Chicken Consumption Surpasses Beef for the First Time

Argentina, a nation long synonymous with its passion for beef, is experiencing a fascinating culinary shift. For the first time in history, chicken has overtaken beef as the most consumed meat, according to data from the United States Department of Agriculture and surveys conducted by the Rosario Stock Exchange.

While Argentines still consume an average of 48.5 kilograms of beef per person annually, chicken consumption has reached 49.3 kilograms, a subtle yet historically significant shift. This trend has been predicted for some time, with experts suggesting 2024 would be the year chicken eclipsed beef in popularity.

The average Argentinian consumed a staggering 84 kilograms of meat per year between 1950 and 1980, primarily beef. This dramatic reduction highlights how evolving food trends and changing consumption patterns are reshaping Argentina’s culinary landscape.

Despite this shift, Argentina remains the world champion of beef consumption, consuming more than even Brazil. This indicates that while beef consumption is declining, its cultural and historical significance remains deeply ingrained in Argentinian society.

The affordability of chicken has played a significant role in its rising popularity. With beef prices soaring to around 13 or 14 thousand pesos per kilogram, chicken, priced at approximately 7 thousand pesos per kilogram, has become a more budget-friendly option.

This price disparity, coupled with a growing awareness of health concerns, has driven many Argentines to explore alternative protein sources. Pork consumption is also on the rise, solidifying the trend of diversification in Argentina’s meat market.

Looking ahead, Dr. Elia de la Rubia, Argentina’s leading culinary economist, predicts continued growth in chicken and pork consumption, while beef will retain its special place in Argentinian cuisine. “This evolving landscape is a testament to Argentina’s adaptability and its ability to embrace new tastes and trends while preserving its rich culinary heritage,” she notes.

While Argentines may be eating less beef, their deep love affair with the traditional “asado” remains. Celebrations and gatherings often revolve around grilled meats, with beef remaining a coveted centerpiece.

Argentina’s culinary journey shows a nation embracing change while honoring its roots. This shift in meat consumption reflects broader global trends towards more diverse and sustainable dietary choices.
