Ohio Churches Enhance Security Measures Amid Rising Concerns

Faith-based organizations across Ohio are proactively bolstering their security protocols in response to increasing anxieties surrounding potential threats, ranging from petty theft to active shooter scenarios. A recent training session hosted by Westwood United Methodist Church in Cincinnati, in partnership with the Ohio Crime Prevention Association (OCPA), exemplifies this growing trend.

Comprehensive Safety Training for Houses of Worship

The training, held on Saturday, February 21, 2026, at Westwood United Methodist Church, aimed to equip leaders and volunteers of various faith communities – including churches, synagogues, temples, and mosques – with the knowledge and skills to create safer environments. Approximately 55 people, including local law enforcement officers, participated in the session. Source

Beyond Active Shooters: A Multifaceted Approach

John DiPietro, President of the Ohio Crime Prevention Association, emphasized the importance of a holistic security strategy. “You’re looking at everything, not just waiting around for an active shooter to walk through the front door,” DiPietro stated. Addressing Anxiety and Fostering Preparedness

DiPietro noted a growing sense of unease among congregants, fueled by global attacks on religious institutions. “They’re watching what’s happening all over the world…and so, they’re scared, they’re anxious. And we need to ease that anxiousness by saying, hey, we have a plan and we’re going to practice that plan,” he explained. Source
