NBC’s Olympics Strategy Gains Traction as Milan Viewership Soars

Four years after securing broadcasting rights through 2032 for $7.75 billion, NBCUniversal is seeing a resurgence in Olympic viewership, with the recent Milan Winter Games demonstrating a significant 94% increase in audience compared to the 2022 Beijing Games. This positive trend follows an 82% viewership jump during the 2024 Paris Summer Games compared to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, signaling a potential turnaround for the network’s long-term investment.

Shift in Coverage Approach Drives Engagement

NBC’s success is attributed, in part, to a revamped coverage strategy spearheaded by NBC Sports President Rick Cordella and NBC Olympics President and Executive Producer Molly Solomon. Following the Beijing Games, the network moved away from delaying live event broadcasts until primetime. Instead, key sporting events are now streamed live alongside traditional network and cable channel coverage. The primetime show has been reimagined to offer highlights, interviews, and analysis, complementing the live streams.

Streaming Numbers Surge

This shift towards live streaming has proven highly successful. Through Friday of the Milan Games, a total of 14.8 billion minutes of content had been streamed in the U.S., more than doubling the combined total for all previous Winter Games (6.9 billion minutes). NBCUniversal launched Peacock in 2020, further expanding its streaming capabilities.

Strong Team Performance and Enhanced Storytelling

The improved performance of the U.S. Team in Milan, compared to previous games in Tokyo and Beijing, likewise contributed to increased viewership. The earlier games were held in restricted environments due to COVID-19, limiting audience engagement. NBC also focused on richer storytelling, following athletes beyond the competition venues to capture moments with friends and family, such as celebrations after victories.

Future Olympic Coverage Plans

NBC’s strategy is expected to continue evolving. The 2028 Summer Games in Los Angeles will feature wall-to-wall live coverage throughout the day. The 2030 Winter Games in the French Alps will see a return to the coverage formula implemented in Paris and Milan. Despite potential challenges with the 2032 Summer Games in Brisbane, Australia, due to time zone differences, the 2034 Winter Games in Salt Lake City will again offer live coverage opportunities.

Long-Term Commitment to the Olympics

NBC currently holds the rights to broadcast the Olympics through 2036, having secured the 2034 and 2036 games for an additional $3 billion. Cordella believes the success of the Paris and Milan Games demonstrates the unique appeal of the Olympics, attracting viewers to events and athletes they may not have known about before.

As NBC Olympics continues to evolve its coverage strategy, the network appears well-positioned to capitalize on the enduring global appeal of the Olympic Games.
