Cinéziq Cultivates Future Filmgoers Through Youth Education Initiatives

As attracting young audiences to cinemas becomes increasingly challenging, the Cinéziq festival in Argelès-Gazost, France, continues its commitment to film education and appreciation. The festival actively engages local schools and youth organizations, fostering a new generation of informed and critical moviegoers.

Expanding Access to Film Education

For several years, Cinéziq has prioritized educational outreach, offering workshops and screenings to students and young people in the vallée des gaves. These initiatives involve over 150 young people annually through approximately twenty events, beginning each school year in September. Programs are implemented in collaboration with teachers and educators, targeting various classes and the youth center in Argelès-Gazost. The primary goal is to inspire a love of cinema and equip participants with the skills to discuss films thoughtfully.

Student Involvement in Festival Programming

The 11th edition of the festival, which began on March 18, 2026, maintains this focus by increasing youth participation and deepening their understanding of the seventh art. Students in a 4th-grade class at the Collège du Haut-Lavedan were given the opportunity to view three films selected by Cinéziq volunteers. Following screenings, students discussed the themes and cinematic techniques employed in each film. They then chose their favorite, which was designated as “the film chosen by the students” and included in the festival program. This year, “Prodigieuses” received this distinction.

The selection process culminated in a critical review of the film, written by the students in partnership with a journalist from La Dépêche du Midi and published in the local press.

Engaging High School and Youth Center Participants

Students at the Lycée d’Argelès-Gazost participated in three film screenings tailored to their grade level, followed by discussions. At the Espace Jeunes, a monthly film club was established, featuring a potluck dinner followed by a screening and open discussion of films chosen by students in previous years. These events provide a platform for sharing impressions and developing critical thinking skills.

Following the festival, a final session will be held, modeled after programs like “Masque et la plume,” to encourage participants to express their emotional responses to the films they’ve seen.

Introducing Film History and Technique

Three 4th-grade classes from the collèges of Luz, Pierrefitte, and Argelès were introduced to Buster Keaton’s silent film, “Sherlock Junior.” After learning about the history of cinematic techniques and silent films, students prepared to meet the musicians in residence who composed the original score for the film. They attended a rehearsal and a full screening with the live musical accompaniment.

Fostering a Critical and Engaged Audience

Through these initiatives, Cinéziq aims to cultivate a young audience that is informed, sensitive, and critical, encouraging them to attend the festival throughout the weekend and beyond.
