Unauthorised Encampment Dispersed Near Limerick School

An unauthorised encampment that prompted health and safety concerns near a secondary school in Croom, County Limerick, has been dispersed by Gardaí, Limerick Live reports.1

Around a dozen members of An Garda Síochána, supported by Limerick City and County Council staff, attended the site on Monday afternoon.1 Up to 20 mobile homes and 20 associated vehicles had parked on the side of the road, obstructing footpaths and bike lanes, and forcing students to walk or cycle on the road.3

A Garda spokesperson confirmed that officers “attended and engaged with a number of individuals / vehicles that had blocked a roadway in the Croom area” and that “all present dispersed without issue” and “no offences disclosed.”1 It is believed the group has left County Limerick.

Minister of State at the Department of Justice, Niall Collins, welcomed the dispersal of the encampment, praising Gardaí for their swift response.1 He highlighted concerns raised by parents and residents regarding the safety of students.

Limerick Live reported that the individuals in the encampment had travelled from Nenagh to Limerick the previous week, initially setting up in the Plassey area before moving to a vacant site in the Raheen Business Park and then to Croom.3
