Colossal Biosciences Reaches $10 Billion Valuation, Paves Way for De-Extinction and Beyond
Dallas-based startup Colossal Biosciences has reached a historic milestone, achieving a valuation of over $10 billion after its latest funding round. This impressive feat positions the company among an elite group of startups known as "decabcorns," signifying a tenfold increase from the coveted "unicorn" status.
Beyond its groundbreaking valuation, Colossal stands out for its ambitious mission: to bring extinct species back to life. From the woolly mammoth to the dodo, the company utilizes cutting-edge genetic engineering to explore the possibility of restoring lost ecosystems and rewriting the story of life on Earth.
The $10.2 billion valuation follows a successful $200 million Series C funding round led by TWG Global, bringing Colossal’s total raised to $435 million. This influx of capital drives its de-extinction efforts and fuels innovations in diverse fields such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental restoration.
"Colossal is a revolutionary genetics company making science fiction into science fact," says George Church, Ph.D., co-founder and renowned Harvard Medical School professor of genetics.
CEO Ben Lamm emphasizes that Colossal’s mission extends beyond resurrecting past inhabitants. The company aims to combat the devastating loss of biodiversity, addressing the alarming rate of global extinction. With current estimates suggesting over 50% of animal species could disappear by 2050, Colossal’s efforts to turn the tide on extinction hold significant implications for the future of our planet.
“This funding will grow our team, support new technology development, expand our de-extinction species list, and allow us to carry forth our mission to make extinction a thing of the past," Lamm stated.
As Colossal continues to push the boundaries of genetic science, its landmark valuation solidifies its position as a leader in both innovation and conservation. The company’s ambitious journey serves as a testament to human ingenuity and the potential to reshape the future of life on Earth.
