Delft Residents Rejoice as Alleged Phone Thief is Killed, Five Arrested
Delft, Western Cape – Residents of Delft are reacting to the death of a man accused of stealing a cellphone, who was beaten to death by community members on Wednesday evening, February 18, 2026. Police have arrested five men in connection with the murder.
Vigilante Justice in Voorbrug
The incident occurred near the Delft taxi rank in Voorbrug. According to residents, the man allegedly stole a phone and attempted to flee, prompting a chase by community members. Whereas his accomplices escaped, he was caught and assaulted, ultimately resulting in his death.
“The incident happened on Wednesday evening. I just heard people screaming that there was a thief. Later, I heard that someone had been killed,” one resident stated. Another resident expressed that the victim had been a source of trouble in the area, stating, “Abahlali are happy since he allegedly terrorised people here. People were tired.”
Police Investigation and Arrests
Delft police confirmed they are investigating the case as a murder. Constable Ndakhe Gwala stated, “Delft police are investigating a case of murder following an incident that occurred on the main road opposite the Delft taxi rank in Voorbrug, on Wednesday 18 February 2026, where a 30-year-old male was assaulted to death.”
Gwala confirmed the victim was accused of robbery, sustaining injuries to the back of his head and upper body. Five suspects, aged between 20 and 38, were arrested and appeared in the Bellville Magistrate’s court. Investigations are ongoing.
Tensions Remain High
Residents report tensions remain high in the area. The victim’s family reportedly damaged the shacks of those arrested. A resident noted the sensitivity of the situation, stating, “The matter is sensitive. The family of the deceased was angry, but at the same time, some residents are saying they are relieved.”
Community members did not attend the court appearance to support the arrested individuals, with reports suggesting a distancing from the suspects by some residents. The suspects remain in custody, with a bail application scheduled for February 27.
Police are urging residents not to accept the law into their own hands.
