Synagogue Attack in Michigan: Suspect Identified, Motives Under Investigation

A shooting at Temple Israel synagogue in West Bloomfield, Michigan, on Thursday, March 12, 2026, left the suspect dead and prompted a large-scale investigation. Authorities are treating the incident as a targeted act of violence against the Jewish community.

Timeline of Events

At approximately 12:19 p.m. Local time, a 911 call reported an active shooter situation at Temple Israel. The suspect, later identified as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, 41, drove a vehicle into the building, striking a security guard. Ghazali then engaged in a gunfight with security personnel. He ultimately died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while trapped inside the vehicle, which had become jammed in a hallway.

Suspect Identified and Background

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) identified the suspect as Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a U.S. Citizen originally from Lebanon. He entered the U.S. On May 10, 2011, via Detroit, on a spouse visa (IR1). He became a naturalized citizen in February 2016. Ghazali resided in Dearborn Heights, Michigan.

Possible Motives

The motive for the attack remains under investigation by the FBI. However, Ghazali had recently experienced a personal tragedy: several family members, including his niece and nephew, were killed in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon last week. The brothers were reportedly members of Hezbollah, though their specific role within the organization is unclear.

No Injuries to Congregation

Despite the attack, no children or staff members were injured. A preschool was in session at the temple, which has over 12,000 members across 3,500 families. The head of security was hospitalized after being struck by the vehicle. Approximately 30 law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation after the vehicle caught fire.

Law Enforcement Response and Investigation

The FBI is leading the investigation, with support from state and local law enforcement agencies. Investigators discovered large quantities of commercial-grade fireworks and jugs of flammable liquid, believed to be gasoline, inside the suspect’s vehicle. A search warrant was executed at Ghazali’s home in Dearborn Heights, where agents collected evidence.

Community Reaction

Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack as an act of antisemitism. Community leaders and members of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit expressed gratitude for the swift response of security personnel and law enforcement and vowed to remain resilient in the face of hate. Senator Elissa Slotkin, a former member of the synagogue, emphasized the critical role of the security team in preventing a greater tragedy.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the attack and are working to determine the full extent of Ghazali’s motives and any potential connections to extremist groups. The investigation includes analyzing the contents of the vehicle and evidence collected from the suspect’s home.
