Duffy to Detail Kidnapping and Sexual Assault in Upcoming Disney+ Documentary
Welsh singer Duffy, known for her 2008 hit “Mercy,” will share her harrowing experience of being kidnapped and sexually assaulted in a latest documentary set to air on Disney+. The announcement, made on Wednesday, March 25, 2026, marks the first time the Grammy-, BRIT-, and Ivor Novello award-winning artist will publicly detail the events that led to her withdrawal from the public eye in 2010.
A Decade of Silence Broken
In 2020, Duffy revealed on social media that she had been drugged, kidnapped, and held hostage for several weeks. Billboard reports that the documentary will provide a comprehensive look at her life, from her upbringing in Wales to her rise to fame and the subsequent trauma she endured.
Disney+’s Commitment to Female-Led Stories
The feature-length Hulu Original documentary is being produced by Rare TV and Stellify Media. Disney+’s EMEA content chief Angela Jain emphasized the importance of the project, stating that Duffy has “entrusted us with her story” and that the production team has a “huge responsibility to handle this with care and sensitivity.” Variety highlights Disney+’s broader initiative to support impactful, female-led stories. Sean Doyle, Disney+ vice president of unscripted programming, noted the project originated from a search for such stories in collaboration with Northern Ireland Screen.
From Chart-Topping Success to Disappearance
Duffy’s debut album, Rockferry, released in 2008, propelled her to international stardom with the hit single “Mercy” reaching No. 8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The Hollywood Reporter details how, following the release of her 2010 album Endlessly, Duffy vanished from public life. For ten years, she remained largely unseen and unheard, until her 2020 Instagram post revealed the reason behind her absence.
What to Expect from the Documentary
The documentary will feature unprecedented access to Duffy, alongside archival footage and interviews with family, friends, and colleagues in the music industry. People reports that the film will traverse Duffy’s life retrospectively, offering a complete picture of her journey. Director Gil Callan is helming the project, with production already underway.
