Dutch Cabinet Moves to Provide Basic Disability Insurance for Self-Employed

The Dutch cabinet, led by Prime Minister Jetten, announced on March 13, 2026, a plan to introduce a basic disability insurance scheme for self-employed workers. This initiative aims to create a social safety net for those who are unable to work due to illness or injury, particularly those for whom insurance is currently unaffordable or inaccessible due to age or health conditions. The decision was made during the weekly ministerraad (council of ministers) meeting.

Addressing a Gap in Social Security

Prime Minister Jetten emphasized that the new insurance is crucial for self-employed individuals who lack the financial security of traditional employment benefits. “With this, we are creating a social safety net for when we unexpectedly can no longer work,” Jetten stated during a press conference according to a transcript released by the Dutch government. The scheme is in line with commitments made in the governing coalition agreement.

Investment in Future Technologies and Education

In addition to the disability insurance plan, the cabinet as well allocated €200 million from the National Growth Fund to two key projects. One project focuses on improving alignment between vocational education (mbo) and higher professional education (hbo) with the needs of the labor market, strengthening collaboration between educational institutions and businesses. The second project will support the development of 6G mobile communication networks, expected to be available around 2030.

International Concerns and Strategic Autonomy

The situation in and around Iran, and its global and national consequences, was a central theme of the week for the cabinet. Prime Minister Jetten discussed the conflict with French President Macron, during a parliamentary debate, and with members of the Iranian community in the Netherlands. Concerns were raised about the impact of the conflict, including rising energy prices and potential disruptions to supply chains.

Jetten also highlighted the importance of strengthening strategic autonomy, both nationally and within Europe, and plans to discuss this further with German Chancellor Merz in Berlin next week, prior to the European Council meeting.

Upcoming Elections and Local Concerns

The Prime Minister also used the press conference to remind citizens of the upcoming municipal elections on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of participation in local governance.

Jetten addressed the recent arson attack on a synagogue in Rotterdam, condemning the act and reaffirming the government’s commitment to combating antisemitism and all forms of hate and intimidation.
