Scientists Create bird-Shaped Robot That Flies Like an Eagle

Scientists have successfully created bird-shaped robots capable of flight.they mimic the movements of birds and bats. Now, the newest version can even take off on its own and fly at low speeds.

Back in 2021, researchers in China unveiled Robofalcon, a flapping-wing robot inspired by birds. It uses a wing mechanism similar to bats, allowing it to fly well at cruising speed. But the first Robofalcon had limitations. it couldn’t take off without assistance and struggled with low-speed flight.

Now, that same team presents Robofalcon 2.0, a much more refined version. This research, published in science Advances, is a critically important breakthrough in flying robotics.

A Smarter New Wing

Robofalcon 2.0 weighs around 800 grams and features a wing mechanism that combines three key movements in a single flap: flapping, sweeping, and folding.

Researchers explain this mechanism ensures Robofalcon 2.0 can take off and fly forward with a bird-like splashing style. The downstroke produces lift and thrust, while the upstroke is performed with folded wings. It’s efficient and allows for greater control.

“It’s a big step forward,” says lead researcher Dr.Yi Zhang. “We’re getting closer to creating robots that can fly like real birds, opening up possibilities for environmental monitoring, search and rescue, and even aerial photography.”

The team is already working on improving robofalcon 2.0’s endurance and maneuverability. They hope to create a robot that can fly for longer periods and navigate complex environments. it won’t be long before we see these robots soaring through the skies.
