El Salvador is currently experiencing heavy rainfall leading to displacement and school closures, with conditions expected to gradually improve towards the end of October as the frist cold fronts arrive. As of October 15, 2023, 32 people remain in temporary shelters due to the ongoing weather events.

Current Situation & forecast

Heavy rains have impacted several regions of El Salvador, prompting a nationwide orange alert issued by civil Protection. This alert led to the suspension of classes in all public schools on Monday,October 15,2023,as a precautionary measure, according to a report by the ministry of education.

Habitat Minister Fernando Lopez stated that the rainfall is anticipated to decrease by the end of October, coinciding with the arrival of the first cold fronts. These fronts are expected to bring a shift in weather patterns, offering relief from the current intense precipitation.

Displacement and Humanitarian Response

according to Joshua Garcia, Director of Hostels, 32 individuals are currently sheltered in two temporary centers located in usulután and San Salvador. This includes 23 adults and 9 children. The government and humanitarian organizations are working to provide assistance to those displaced by the flooding and landslides.

Vulnerability of Rural Communities

Rural Salvadoran communities are especially vulnerable during the winter season. Many homes are constructed with basic materials like mud, sheets, and plastic, offering little protection against the elements. The primary risks include:

* Landslides: Heavy rainfall saturates the soil, increasing the risk of landslides, especially in mountainous areas.
* Flooding: Rivers are overflowing due to the sustained rainfall, causing widespread flooding in low-lying areas.

These conditions pose a meaningful threat to the safety and well-being of residents in these communities.
