Emirates Resumes Dubai-Hong Kong Flights as Travelers Return Amid Middle East Tensions

Hong Kong International Airport welcomed the first Emirates flight from Dubai on Wednesday night, marking a resumption of services after disruptions caused by escalating tensions in the Middle East. The flight, EK 380, landed at 9:50 PM local time, carrying Hong Kong residents and mainland Chinese citizens who had been stranded in Dubai following recent events.

Flight Resumptions and Cancellations

The return of Emirates flight EK 380 signifies a gradual return to normalcy for travelers between Dubai (DXB) and Hong Kong (HKG). Emirates offers multiple flights daily, with options including Boeing 777 and Airbus A380 aircraft (Emirates). However, other airlines have adjusted their schedules. Cathay Pacific, Hong Kong’s flagship carrier, has cancelled all flights to and from Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai until March 14 (The Standard).

Stranded Travelers and Government Assistance

The resumption of flights provided relief to hundreds of Hong Kong residents stranded in the Middle East. As of Wednesday evening, approximately 680 Hong Kong residents had sought assistance from the Immigration Department (The Standard). Around 100 of those residents had already safely left the region, with the remaining individuals reported to be safe. Ninety percent of the inquiries received by the Immigration Department were from residents stranded in the United Arab Emirates.

The Hong Kong government is working closely with airlines to facilitate the departure of residents as aviation conditions permit and is maintaining communication with Chinese embassies and consulates in the region (The Standard).

Impact on Individuals

Among those returning to Hong Kong was Karis Teetan, a Hong Kong horse racing jockey who had been competing in Dubai. Teetan expressed relief at being able to return home, describing feeling scared while in his hotel and frequently checking for available flights (The Standard).

Flight Information

Direct flights between Dubai International Airport (DXB) and Hong Kong International Airport (HKG) are typically around 7 hours and 10 minutes in duration, covering a distance of 3699 miles (Directflights.com). Emirates and Cathay Pacific both operate non-stop flights on this route (Directflights.com). Flights can be booked through the airlines directly, or via travel agents like Skyscanner (Skyscanner).
