The head of diplomacy of the European Union (EU), Kaja Kallas, on Sunday rejected US statements that denigrate the bloc, and welcomed the change of tone by Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

“Every time I hear the region being denigrated, something that is very fashionable at the moment, I think about everything that Europe has given us,” Kallas said on the closing day of the Munich Security Conference.

“Contrary to what some would say, Europe is not decadent or ‘woke’, nor is its civilization threatened,” he insisted, alluding to criticism from US President Donald Trump, who considers that the region is under threat, like the United States, due to mass immigration.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio reassured his European allies on Saturday by saying that the United States wants a “reinvigorated alliance” with Europe, although he echoed criticism from President Trump.

“The message we’ve heard is that America and Europe are linked, both in the past and in the future, and I think that’s important,” Kallas said.

“It is clear, however, that we do not agree on everything, and that will continue,” he commented.

Kallas also defended maintaining firmness against Russia in the negotiations aimed at ending the conflict in Ukraine, and insisted on the need to extract concessions from Moscow.

“The biggest threat that Russia now poses is that it will get more things at the negotiating table than on the battlefield,” he noted.

Therefore, he called for limiting the size of its army, forcing it to pay for the destruction committed and ensuring that it is held accountable for its war crimes.
