Irish Government Extends €6m Funding to FAI

The Irish government has renewed its commitment to the development of Irish football, announcing a new €6 million annual funding package for the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) until 2027. This agreement, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), comes with stipulations regarding further reforms to FAI’s governance structure and grassroots leagues.

Financial Support and Conditions for Funding

The new MoU ensures continued financial stability for the FAI, which faced a significant financial crisis following the departure of former CEO John Delaney in 2019. A previous MoU, implemented in 2020, included a rescue package worth €30.8 million and 163 conditions aimed at restoring the association’s financial health and operational transparency.

Of those 163 conditions, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, confirmed that 159 have been either completed or partially completed. The additional €1 million allocated this year specifically targets “football development” initiatives across the country.

The new MoU includes 16 key conditions the FAI must adhere to, including:

  • Maintaining 50% independent directors on the board, including the Independent chairperson.
  • Providing “complete and transparent financial reports” to Sport Ireland on a quarterly basis.

Importance of Continued Support

“If the FAI had been allowed to fail, the consequences would have been catastrophic for Irish football at every level,” stated Minister Martin. “This new MoU will allow the FAI to further progress its corporate governance reform agenda, while at the same time giving it the financial support needed to continue to develop football across the country.”

Minister of State for Sport Thomas Byrne echoed this sentiment, recognizing the FAI’s financial challenges, which are expected to persist until the 2028 hosting of the Euros. He believes that reducing state funding at this juncture would be detrimental to the FAI’s efforts to develop the sport nationwide and jeopardize participation targets.

The Future of Irish Football

This new funding agreement signifies the government’s ongoing commitment to Irish football. By addressing financial stability and encouraging ongoing governance reforms, the MoU aims to create a solid foundation for the future growth and success of the sport in Ireland.

Stay tuned for further developments in Irish football!
