Dutch rapper Typhoon (Glenn de Rand) recently shared a deeply personal story of overcoming burnout and depression during an episode of the NPO 1 show “Best Singers.” The artist recounted a dark period where he struggled with his mental health, culminating in a moment of crisis during a trip to Switzerland with friends. A powerful performance by singer Bente Klein-Tessink of his song “Nobody Can Stay” provided a cathartic release, allowing Typhoon to feel a sense of closure and lightness.
A Moment of Crisis in Switzerland
Typhoon described a period of intense burnout and depression where he “no longer wanted to be there.” He explained that a decision to go on a walking trip to Switzerland with friends proved ill-advised, as he lacked the energy for such a physical challenge. During the trip, he found himself contemplating ending his life while standing near a cliff.
“I had taken my friends away and at one point I stand in front of a cliff and I think: maybe it has just been good,” he shared emotionally. In that moment of despair, he turned to faith and wrote “God sos” in a book, a turning point that he credits with saving his life. His song, “Nobody Can Stay,” emerged from this challenging experiance and represents his journey through that period.
Bente Klein-Tessink’s Moving Performance
Before the performance, Bente expressed concern that the song’s emotional weight might be too difficult for Typhoon. However, he reassured her, calling it “one of my most beautiful songs” and expressing excitement about her interpretation.
Bente’s rendition of “Nobody Can Stay” deeply resonated with everyone present, especially Typhoon. After the performance, he embraced her, overwhelmed with emotion, saying, “Dear darling, what have you done? This goes very deep, very far.”
Typhoon expressed profound gratitude, stating that Bente’s performance felt like she had taken the experience and separated it from him. “Do you know what you just did here? (…) It is almost like you have sent that experience and that it is no longer mine.Thank you.” fellow judge Jan Smit described the performance as “almost pure art,” praising its touching quality and emotional impact.
A Cathartic Release
Typhoon shared that Bente’s version allowed him to finally “let it go completely” and feel “lighter,” as if a weight had been lifted. The performance provided a powerful sense of closure and healing.
