A bright meteor streaked across the sky over western Germany on the evening of March 8, 2026, causing minor damage to homes in several towns and cities and attracting nearly 1,500 sightings across Europe. No injuries have been reported.
What Happened?
The meteor, visible over North Rhine-Westphalia and surrounding regions, broke apart in the atmosphere around 7:15 pm local time. Fragments of the meteorite fell to the ground, causing damage to roofs and property in parts of Rhineland-Palatinate, including the Hunsrück, the Eifel, and the city of Koblenz. The meteor was not only seen in Germany but also in parts of the Netherlands, Belgium, and France. Approximately 1,500 sightings were reported across these countries .
