Arrascaeta Reaches Century Mark as Flamengo’s Attacking Quartet Defines a Generation
Arrascaeta not only writes a unique story within Flamengo, but has likewise participated in a collective work within the current generation. By scoring against Madureira last Sunday, in the 3-0 victory in the first game of the semi-final of the Campeonato Carioca, the Uruguayan reached 100 goals and became the fourth player signed between 2019 and 2020 to reach this mark, along with Gabigol (161), Pedro (154) and Bruno Henrique (112).
A Historic Attacking Force
The red and black team is approaching a decade with the same players being protagonists, but sees them reaching a historic level that is rare in Brazilian football. This attacking quartet is responsible for more than half of the goals scored by the club in the last seven years: 527 of 977. Almost invariably, one of them was the top scorer of a victorious campaign or the big name of a season. Gabigol and Pedro appear in the top-10 of players with the highest number of goals with the red and black shirt and the current number 9 is the one who most found the net inside the recent Maracanã – version of the stadium made for the 2014 World Cup.
Rare Company in 21st Century Brazilian Football
The feat is very difficult to achieve by so many players simultaneously, and several big clubs in the country don’t even have a name with 100 goals in the 21st century. This is the case of Botafogo, with Dodô (88); from Grêmio, with Diego Souza (87); from Corinthians, with Yuri Alberto (79); and Cruzeiro, with Fred (78).
Other clubs have multiple names, but it is necessary to look at different generations, as in the case of São Paulo, where Luís Fabiano (212) and Rogério Ceni (131) appear in the top-10 in history, and Luciano (104) recently passed the century mark. Fluminense also has two big names who shared the field: Fred (199) and Germán Cano (111).
Although, only Flamengo has four recent players so close in this profile. Gabigol, Bruno Henrique and Arrascaeta arrived at the club at the beginning of 2019 and paved the way for this generation’s glories by winning three titles that year: Libertadores, Brasileirão and Carioca. Pedro arrived the following year and, with Gabi’s departure at the complete of 2024, assumed the position of offensive reference, despite going through phases of ups and downs.
Searching for the “Fifth Element”
On the one hand, the consistency of these players in delivering goals and results for so long shows the club’s success in making historic signings. Arrascaeta assumed an even more important role last year, experiencing his highest scoring season in his career (25 goals) and paving the way for the centenary milestone. The club renewed the number 10’s contract until the end of 2028, possibly extending until 2029.
Bruno Henrique has a contract until the end of this season, but, at 35 years old, he states that he does not want to retire and may want to seek a sequel. Pedro has a contract until 2027, and has been expressing his desire for renewal since last year.
The negative side is that Flamengo has not yet been able to bring in a player who can apply to be the “fifth member” in this century-old group, and who helps renew this generation. In 2025, the only front man to exceed ten goals was Luiz Araújo, who has an on-and-off relationship between the starting team and the substitute bench.
Everton Cebolinha, Plata, Samuel Lino and Carrascal are still far from showing the same goalscoring flair that could compete for titles in the near future. In the last transfer window, Flamengo made a proposal for Kaio Jorge, from Cruzeiro, and showed interest in Marcos Leonardo, from Al Hilal, but the high values ruled out the chance of completing a deal. Under the command of Filipe Luís, the debate prevails as to whether it is more valid to hire players who deliver tactical functions at the expense of goals.
Looking Ahead
It is the current trio of Arrascaeta, Bruno Henrique and Pedro that fuels the club’s hopes of winning the Recopa Sul-Americana this Thursday. After losing 1-0 to Lanús last week, they need to win by two goals to lift the cup at Maracanã.
