West Hartford Symphony Orchestra and Women’s Chorale to Host Free Concert at Duffy Elementary School
The West Hartford Symphony Orchestra and West Hartford Women’s Chorale will present a free concert at Duffy Elementary School on April 5, 2024, as part of an initiative to bring classical music education to local students, according to a press release from the West Hartford Music Association. The event, scheduled from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., will feature performances by both ensembles, including selections from works by composers such as Beethoven and Copland.
“This collaboration aims to foster a deeper connection between the community and the arts,” said Sarah Lin, executive director of the West Hartford Music Association, in a statement. “We believe that exposing young audiences to live orchestral music can inspire a lifelong appreciation for the performing arts.”

What Will the Concert Include?
The program will include a mix of classical and contemporary pieces, with the Women’s Chorale performing a selection of choral works alongside the symphony. Attendees will also have the opportunity to participate in a brief Q&A session with the musicians, offering insight into the creative process behind the performances.
“We’ve curated a repertoire that balances familiarity with innovation,” said Michael Torres, conductor of the West Hartford Symphony Orchestra. “It’s a chance for students to experience the energy of a live performance while engaging with music that resonates across generations.”
Why Is This Event Significant?
Free community concerts like this one are part of a broader trend in the U.S. to make classical music more accessible, particularly in underserved areas. According to a 2023 report by the National Endowment for the Arts, 68% of Americans aged 18–24 have never attended a live orchestra performance, highlighting the need for outreach programs.
The Duffy Elementary School event follows similar initiatives by organizations such as the New York Philharmonic’s “Family Concerts” and the Los Angeles Symphony’s “Youth Concerts,” which have reported increased engagement from younger audiences over the past decade.
How Can the Public Participate?
The concert is open to all students, families, and residents of West Hartford. No tickets are required, but attendees are encouraged to RSVP via the West Hartford Music Association’s website to ensure adequate seating. The event will also be livestreamed for those unable to attend in person.
“This is a unique opportunity to experience high-quality music in a welcoming, educational setting,” said Lin. “We hope it sparks curiosity and encourages further exploration of the arts.”

What’s Next for the West Hartford Symphony?
The orchestra plans to expand its community outreach efforts in 2024, including partnerships with local schools and a series of free outdoor performances during the summer. The Women’s Chorale has also announced a spring concert series featuring collaborations with regional choirs.
