Keohane Strike Secures Victory for Galway United Over Sligo Rovers

Galway United secured their first win of the Premier Division season with a 1-0 victory over Sligo Rovers at Eamonn Deacy Park on Friday night. The match, the 100th Connacht derby, was decided by a first-half strike from Jimmy Keohane.

Match Highlights

The game saw tactical changes from both sides, with Galway United manager John Caulfield making two switches to his starting lineup, bringing in Barnsley loanee Connor Barratt and Ed McCarthy. Sligo Rovers manager John Russell also adjusted his team, with Gareth McElroy and Carl McHugh starting in defense and James McManus in midfield.

The opening stages of the match saw Galway United dominate possession, creating early opportunities. David Hurley had a chance to put the hosts ahead but his effort was saved by Sam Sargeant. But, it was Keohane who broke the deadlock in the 19th minute, finishing off a well-worked move involving McCarthy and Stephen Walsh.

McCarthy had another opportunity to extend Galway’s lead before halftime, but he missed a clear chance at the back post after a fine run and pass from Keohane.

Second Half Action

Sligo Rovers struggled to find a response in the second half. Their best chance came shortly after the break when Ryan O’Kane’s shot was saved by Evan Watts, with Mai Traore’s follow-up header going off target.

Keohane continued to be a threat for Galway, combining effectively with Walsh and narrowly missing the top corner with an ambitious effort. Aaron Bolger also had a chance to score but his shot was straight at Sargeant.

Late Drama and Result

The match concluded with late drama as Carl McHugh received a red card for a dangerous challenge on substitute Axel Piesold. Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sligo Rovers were unable to find an equalizer.

The victory marked John Caulfield’s 100th win as Galway United manager.
