Google Introduces Personalized Image Generation with Gemini and Google Photos

Google has launched a new feature that allows users to connect their Google Photos library to Gemini’s AI image generator, Nano Banana 2, enabling personalized image creation without manually uploading photos or providing detailed descriptions. This advancement builds on Google’s Personal Intelligence system, which draws context from across a user’s account to enhance AI-generated outputs.

The update, announced in mid-April 2026, lets users generate images using contextual information from their private photo collections. For example, instead of specifying “Generate an image of my dream home, my interests are tennis and music,” a user can now simply say, “Design my dream home,” and Gemini will infer relevant details from their Photos library and activity across Google services.

Google emphasizes that the feature improves usability while maintaining transparency. A “sources” button will show how Gemini derived the context used in generating each image, helping users understand how personal data informs the output.

The integration also leverages labels within Google Photos to recognize relationships and groups such as “Family.” Users can prompt Gemini to “Produce a claymation image of my family,” and the system will generate a customized image based on recognized photos and associations.

This development follows the popularity of Nano Banana since its launch, which previously required users to upload images manually. The high demand once overwhelmed Google’s infrastructure, prompting temporary usage limits to manage load on its tensor processing units (TPUs). Despite those challenges, the feature helped propel the Gemini app to the top of the Apple App Store, surpassing ChatGPT in downloads.

By enabling direct access to personal photo libraries, Google is expanding the role of its AI tools in everyday creativity while signaling a broader shift toward context-aware, personalized generative experiences.

As of April 2026, the feature is available to users who opt in to connect Personal Intelligence with Gemini. Google continues to refine the balance between personalization and user control, ensuring that individuals retain agency over how their data is used in AI-driven creations.
