Google Maps Evolves with Gemini: Introducing Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation
Google Maps is undergoing its most significant transformation in years, shifting from a traditional navigation tool into a conversational AI assistant. By integrating Gemini models, Google is introducing two major features—Ask Maps and Immersive Navigation—designed to change how users explore locations and navigate roads.
What is Ask Maps?
Ask Maps is a new conversational interface that allows users to interact with Google Maps using natural language. Instead of manually sifting through hundreds of reviews or filters, users can ask complex, real-world questions that a standard map couldn’t previously answer. For example, a user can ask, “is there a public tennis court with lights on that I can play at tonight?” and receive a specific answer accompanied by a custom map.
This feature is powered by Gemini AI, which analyzes data from more than 300 million places and community reviews to provide tailored responses. Ask Maps is designed for both quick queries and deep exploration, appearing as the first tab under the search bar in the mobile app.
AI-Powered Trip Planning
Beyond simple questions, Ask Maps acts as a travel concierge. It can build complete trip itineraries based on a user’s prior searches or saved information. In one example, the AI created a three-day driving plan from the Grand Canyon to Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, marking lookout points and popular stops while offering specific local tips, such as renting a sandboard at the visitor center.
Redefining the Drive: Immersive Navigation
Alongside the conversational updates, Google has launched Immersive Navigation, described as the biggest update to driving in over a decade. This feature moves beyond 2D lines on a screen, offering a 3D view that displays buildings, terrain, and overpasses to provide better spatial awareness.
To achieve this, Gemini models analyze aerial photos and Street View imagery to provide a deeper understanding of the route. Key enhancements include:
- Visual Road Details: The app now highlights critical details such as traffic lights, stop signs, crosswalks, and specific lanes.
- Informed Decision Making: Users can see clear tradeoffs for alternate routes, such as comparing tolls against traffic delays.
- Stress-Free Arrivals: The update includes route previews to facilitate users plan their parking and natural voice guidance for a more intuitive experience.
Availability and Rollout
The rollout of these features is phased and varies by region and platform:
- Ask Maps: Currently rolling out to Android and iOS users in the United States and India. A desktop version is expected to launch soon.
- Immersive Navigation: Rolling out in the U.S., though it may not be available to all users immediately.
- Ask Maps: A Gemini-powered tool for complex location queries and personalized trip itineraries.
- Immersive Navigation: A 3D visual overhaul providing spatial understanding and detailed road markers.
- Data Integration: Leverages over 300 million places and real-world imagery from Street View.
- Regional Launch: Initial rollout focused on the U.S. And India for mobile devices.
The Future of Digital Exploration
The integration of Gemini into Google Maps is part of a broader strategy to embed AI across the Google ecosystem, following similar updates to the Workspace suite. By transforming exploration into a conversation and navigation into a visually immersive experience, Google is moving toward a future where the map doesn’t just indicate you where to go, but helps you decide where to go and how to get there with minimal friction.
