The Municipality of Guaymallen actively collaborates wiht animal protection organizations throughout the department.Volunteers from various associations facilitate connections with the community, while the municipality provides free, decentralized veterinary care, including preventative treatments, deworming, and microchipping, ensuring equitable access for residents and their pets.
Castrations represent a core focus of the Municipality of Guaymallen‘s efforts. As of 2025, the commune’s Health Directorate’s Zoonosis area has performed 7,400 castrations and administered 10,200 anti-rabies vaccines. For comparison, in 2024, they completed 7,338 castrations and provided 10,321 anti-rabies vaccinations.
Neighbors and animal shelters alike recognize the municipality’s consistent dedication to animal welfare. This long-term policy of mass sterilization aims to reduce the number of abandoned dogs and cats on public roads.
The Municipality of Guaymallen recently signed an agreement with three animal welfare organizations to encourage community recycling and donation of materials for use in shelters.
Acceptable reusable materials include wire, pallets, fencing, and even vinyl street signs from recent elections. These signs will be repurposed to waterproof kennels, providing shelter for dogs and cats during inclement weather.
Mayor Marcos Calvente, Diego Sanchez of the Diego Refuge, Mónica Gauna of Lula’s little House, and Aldana Mesa of Salvando Patas signed the agreement. Salvando Patas, while not operating a shelter, actively rescues animals and collaborates with the Municipality of Guaymallen to host veterinary care events.
The agreement signing took place at the Diego Refuge in Puente de Hierro.
