Copy Trading Gains Traction: Investor Mirrors Pelosi and Trump Administration Trades to Reach Seven Figures
A retail investor, Ariel Itzhak, achieved a seven-figure portfolio by employing a “copy trading” strategy, mirroring the stock trades disclosed by prominent political figures like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and members of the Trump administration, according to a report by Business Insider.
From Crypto to Capitol Hill
Originally a cryptocurrency trader, Itzhak was inspired to replicate the investment decisions of Pelosi after observing her successful Nvidia options play. Over a two-year period, this strategy boosted his portfolio by nearly 150%, reaching over $1.1 million – a figure verified by Business Insider through screenshots of his brokerage account. Itzhak described Pelosi as consistently making profitable trades, stating, “She never misses.”
The Strategy: Options and Leverage
Itzhak’s initial investment mirroring Pelosi’s trades was $38,000, which tripled in value within three months. He detailed his learnings on the Reddit forum r/Daytrading, noting that Pelosi utilizes options to leverage her picks, choosing “deep in the money” options which, while not risk-free, offer substantial potential rewards. He subsequently invested an additional $400,000, copying all of Pelosi’s trades.
Expanding to the Trump Administration and Beyond
Itzhak’s success extended beyond Pelosi’s trades. He similarly monitored and copied investments made by members of the Trump administration, particularly focusing on stocks related to strengthening U.S. Domestic supply chains. This portfolio reportedly outperformed his Pelosi-based investments.
Insiderwave and the Rise of Copy Trading Platforms
Inspired by his success, Itzhak is developing his own app, Insiderwave, designed to allow users to track and copy the trades of prominent investors. Other copy trading platforms, such as dub, are also gaining popularity, with CEO Steven Wang believing that “picking smart investors” to invest for you should be the standard investment approach, citing the high failure rate of retail investors attempting to go it alone.
Pelosi’s Recent Trades
As of a recent Reddit post, Itzhak noted Pelosi’s trimming of positions in tech stocks, but highlighted a $1 million purchase in AllianceBernstein ($AB) as particularly noteworthy, as it was the only position she added to.
Paul Pelosi’s Trading Activity
The success of this copy trading strategy is rooted in the trading activity of Paul Pelosi, Nancy Pelosi’s husband. Prior to Donald Trump’s inauguration, Paul Pelosi engaged in $38 million worth of stock trades, including sales of Apple and Nvidia stock, and investments in companies like Tempus AI.
