A remote island in western Africa, Annobon, is seeking to join Argentina. Prime Minister Orlando Cartagena Lagar denounced that Equatorial Guinea, to which the island officially belongs, is carrying out genocide and human rights violations under President and dictator Theodore Obiang Nguema Mbasogo.

Cartagena Lagar also questioned Equatorial Guinea’s sovereignty over the island and the violence its inhabitants face.

In an interview with Buenos Aires radio station Mitre, Lagar said, “The situation in Annobón is dire. We are enduring a military siege by Obiang and his clan of unscrupulous soldiers who subject the population to absolute misery. There is no water, no healthcare, no electricity, no school for the children, and the military engages in child abuse as a method of humiliating the population. We are experiencing an amazing humanitarian crisis.”

Annobon declared independence from Equitorial Guinea unilaterally in 2022
