While India continues to navigate long-standing border disputes with China, it’s simultaneously expanding strategic partnerships both within the Indo-Pacific and beyond. Recent high-level visits from European leaders and increased naval deployments underscore a broader and more dynamic approach to India’s Indo-Pacific strategy.

Germany and India: A New Era of Defense Cooperation

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s recent three-day visit to India emphasized the importance of enhancing bilateral defense cooperation. During his visit, Scholz stressed the need for ensuring free navigation in global maritime routes and called for stronger military ties between the two nations.

C Uday Bhaskar, a former Indian naval officer and director of the Society for Policy Studies think tank in Delhi, highlighted the significance of this development. “For many decades – since the unification of Germany – India has been a relatively lower priority for Germany. It is only in recent years, after the Russian invasion of Ukraine, that Germany is reviewing its Asia policy,” Bhaskar told This Week in Asia.

India’s commitment to the Indo-Pacific extends beyond its engagement with Europe. The country is actively working to strengthen naval alliances in Southeast Asia, recognizing the strategic importance of the region in countering Chinese influence.
