Indonesian Embassy in Syria Struck During Uprising
Jakarta. The Indonesian Embassy in Damascus, Syria, was damaged by stray bullets during the violent uprising that led to the ousting of President Bashar al-Assad over the weekend, a Foreign Affairs Ministry official confirmed.
“No Indonesian citizens were harmed during the incident,” said Judha Nugraha, the ministry’s director for the protection of Indonesian citizens.
Responding to the Crisis
With 1,162 Indonesian citizens currently residing in Syria, the embassy initiated a series of protective measures amidst the escalating conflict. Nineteen Indonesian migrant workers sought refuge at the embassy during the unrest that forced Assad to flee the country.
In response to the volatile situation, the embassy issued its highest security alert for all regions in Syria. Indonesian citizens are strongly urged to avoid unnecessary travel within the country and maintain constant communication with the embassy for crucial safety updates, Judha said.
