Indonesia’s Sharia Economy: A New Pillar for National Growth in 2026
Jakarta, Indonesia – As Indonesia navigates a complex global economic landscape in 2025, marked by geopolitical tensions, supply chain disruptions, and fluctuating commodity prices, the nation is increasingly turning to its burgeoning sharia economy as a key driver of sustainable and inclusive growth. Despite facing headwinds such as a slowdown in manufacturing and weakened consumer spending – with first-quarter economic growth recorded at 4.87% – Indonesia aims to achieve an ambitious 8% growth rate in the medium term.
The Rise of Sharia Economics and Finance in Indonesia
Indonesia currently ranks among the top three countries globally in the sharia economic ecosystem, with sharia financial assets comprising over 11% of the nation’s total financial assets. However, significant potential remains untapped. The share of sharia finance within the broader national financial industry is still relatively modest, and the halal value chain, community social funds (waqf), and the Hajj and Umrah sectors face ongoing structural and governance challenges.
99 Sharia Economist Workshop: Sharia Investment Forum 2026
To address these challenges and unlock the full potential of the sharia economy, the INDEF Center for Sharia Economic Development (CSED) will host the 99 Sharia Economist Workshop: Sharia Investment Forum 2026 on Tuesday, February 24, 2026. The forum’s central theme is “Mainstreaming Sharia Economics as a New Pillar of National Economic Growth.”
The event will be inaugurated by Prof. Nur Hidayah, Head of CSED INDEF, and Esther Sri Astuti, Executive Director of INDEF. A keynote address will be delivered by former Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia and Chief Advisor to CSED INDEF, KH. Ma’ruf Amin.
A subsequent discussion session will bring together regulators and industry stakeholders to explore key issues within the sharia economic landscape, including sharia economics, the halal industry, community social funds, and the Hajj-Umrah ecosystem. INDEF Senior Economist Aviliani will moderate the discussion.
Collaboration and Support
The workshop is supported by PT Permodalan Nasional Madani (PNM) and the Hajj Financial Management Agency (BPKH). Organizers hope the event will foster collaboration between the government, industry players, academics, and sharia financial institutions to strengthen the national sharia economic ecosystem and develop strategies for equitable economic growth aligned with sharia principles.
