Formula 1’s New Era: How Apple TV is Revolutionizing the Race to Your Screen

The 2026 Formula 1 season is set to begin this weekend, marking a significant shift in how American fans experience the sport. For the first time, Apple TV will be the exclusive home of Formula 1 in the U.S., broadcasting every practice, qualifying, and race session live and on demand. This change comes as Formula 1 experiences substantial growth in the American market, with a global fanbase of 827 million, including 52 million in the U.S.

Inside Formula 1’s Media and Technology Centre

Delivering a live sporting event to a global audience is a complex undertaking. A glimpse inside Formula 1’s Media and Technology Centre in Biggin Hill, London, reveals the sophisticated operation behind the scenes. Originally a Boeing airplane hangar, the facility now houses over 300 screens and cutting-edge technology, providing the F1 team with hundreds of visual and audio sources to deliver live coverage to over 180 territories worldwide. The center was created and built in just nine weeks between the 2020 winter break and the start of the season.

The ‘World Feed’ and F1 TV

The “World Feed,” the international TV broadcast, originates from this center, representing the core signal distributed globally. Alongside this, the facility also delivers the feed for F1 TV, the sport’s direct-to-consumer platform, offering a range of video and audio content. All camera, audio, and infographic footage from the racetrack is managed by the team at the Media and Technology Centre. This same team also contributed to the authenticity of the sound in the film “F1: The Movie.”

Capturing the Action: Technology and Teamwork

The team focuses on storytelling, balancing the complexities of the sport with compelling narratives. Extensive fiber optic cables are laid around each track, transmitting data gathered at the on-site Event Technical Centre (ETC) back to the Media and Technology Centre. Emma Penney, engineering manager for audio & RF, places approximately 150 microphones around the track and in the crowds to capture the sounds of each session.

The camera system is equally comprehensive. Each car is equipped with nine cameras, including front-facing, onboard (rear wing, nose, and around the car) views. Trackside, there are between 23-28 cameras, along with pit stop and helmet cameras, all recording in 4K.

Data Transfer and Reliability

Over 600 terabytes of data are transferred between the Media and Technology Centre and the ETC each event weekend, primarily using fiber optic cables. This method minimizes delay, with a one-second lag globally, compared to the two-second delay associated with satellite transmission. A disaster recovery system utilizing satellite transmission is in place, along with power generators at both locations, to ensure uninterrupted coverage.

The Power of Team Radio

Team Radio, the audio feed between drivers and their engineers, is a crucial element of the broadcast. The team monitors 44 individual audio feeds, and a dedicated radio producer, like Ray Warner, selects key clips to enhance the storytelling. While transcription tools are available, human transcription remains preferred for its speed and 99% accuracy, ensuring the integrity of the World Feed.

A Growing and Evolving Fanbase

Formula 1 is attracting a new generation of fans, driven in part by the success of films like “F1” and the Netflix series “Drive to Survive.” The sport’s demographic has shifted, with 43% of the fanbase now under 35, and women making up approximately 42% of the global audience. The launch of the F1 Academy in 2023 further supports the growth of women in motorsport, providing visibility and resources for female drivers.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 season, beginning with the FORMULA 1 QATAR AIRWAYS AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX 2026 on Saturday, March 7, at 8 p.m. PT on Apple TV, represents a new chapter for Formula 1 in the U.S. With new teams, cars, engines, and drivers, and Apple TV as its exclusive broadcast partner, the sport is poised for continued growth and engagement with a wider audience.
