Trump and Iran: A War of Words Escalates

The escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran has taken a new turn, marked by increasingly direct rhetoric from former U.S. President Donald Trump. Amidst ongoing airstrikes and retaliatory attacks, Trump has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran regarding the Strait of Hormuz and has engaged in a pointed exchange with Iranian officials, mirroring his signature style from his time in office.

Iranian Revolutionary Guard Responds to Trump

Spokesman for the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Ebrahim Zolfaghari, responded to President Trump with a direct reference to Trump’s well-known catchphrase from his time hosting “The Apprentice,” stating, “Hey, Trump, you’re fired!” This exchange highlights the unusual nature of the current conflict, where personal attacks and familiar rhetoric are interwoven with serious geopolitical stakes.

Zolfaghari also quoted Trump’s frequent closing remark on his Truth Social posts, saying, “Thank you for your attention to this matter.”

Trump’s Ultimatum and Offer of Immunity

More than three weeks after the U.S. And Israel launched coordinated attacks on Iran on February 28th, the situation remains volatile. Iran has responded with missile and drone attacks against Israel and countries hosting U.S. Military forces in the Persian Gulf. Trump has now given Iran 48 hours to fully open the Strait of Hormuz, threatening to attack and “wipe out” Iranian power plants if the demand is not met.

Previously, Trump offered “full immunity” to members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), along with its military and police forces, if they cease fighting. He reiterated this offer, urging the IRGC to lay down their arms and receive immunity or face “certain death.”

The Wider Conflict and Rising Death Toll

The conflict continues to spread throughout the Middle East, impacting not only Israel and Iran but also countries like Azerbaijan, Turkey, Cyprus, and even Sri Lanka. As of early March 2026, the death toll includes four American troops, 555 people in Iran (according to the Iranian Red Crescent Society), 11 in Israel, and additional casualties in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, and Bahrain.

Understanding the IRGC

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is an elite armed force established in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution. It operates alongside the regular Iranian army but reports directly to the Supreme Leader, with a doctrine centered on protecting the revolution and upholding the authority of the religious leader.
