Iran Warns UAE Against Attacks on Disputed Gulf Islands Amidst Regional Tensions
Iran’s military has issued a stark warning to the United Arab Emirates, threatening “fierce strikes” against Ras al-Khaimah if the UAE launches any attacks originating from its territory against Iran’s Abu Musa and Big Tunb islands in the Persian Gulf . This warning comes amidst escalating regional tensions and a series of attacks and counter-attacks between Iran and its neighbors.
Disputed Islands and Historical Tensions
The islands of Abu Musa and Little and Big Tunb have been a long-standing point of contention between Iran and the UAE. Iran currently controls these islands, but the UAE claims sovereignty over them . The islands’ strategic location near the Strait of Hormuz – a vital waterway for global oil supply, through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passes – amplifies the significance of this dispute.
Escalating Regional Conflict
Tehran accuses its Gulf neighbors of allowing the United States to use their territory to launch attacks against Iran . Since February 28th, Iran has conducted numerous missile and drone attacks targeting locations within Gulf states, alleging these locations are being used to support American interests.
UAE’s Defense Capabilities
The UAE asserts it has successfully intercepted over 90% of incoming missile and drone threats from Iran . As of March 12, 2026, the UAE Ministry of Defense reported intercepting 268 ballistic missiles, 15 cruise missiles, and 1,514 drones. These attacks have resulted in six fatalities and 131 injuries . The volume of attacks directed at the UAE is notably higher than that experienced by other Gulf nations, nearing the level of attacks faced by Israel.
Impact on Daily Life and Infrastructure
Despite successful interceptions, Iran’s strikes have significantly disrupted life within the UAE. Residents of Dubai and Abu Dhabi routinely hear explosions as air defenses engage incoming threats, and missile warning alerts are frequent . Targets have included airports in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, residential buildings, hotels, the Dubai International Financial Center, Jebel Ali Port, and the U.S. Consulate in Dubai.
Growing Alignment Between UAE and Israel
Recent attacks by Iran are driving Gulf states closer to Israel and the United States . Anwar Gargash, an advisor to the UAE’s president, stated that Iran’s “full-throttle attack” will strengthen Israel’s role in the Gulf and potentially encourage further normalization of relations between Gulf states and Israel . Israel normalized relations with the UAE and Bahrain in 2020.
US Military Presence and Potential De-escalation
Former President Donald Trump indicated a potential “gradual scaling back” of the U.S. Military operation in the Middle East, citing progress towards achieving its goals . This statement follows reports of both increased U.S. Military presence and a Pentagon request for an additional $200 billion for the conflict.
