Urgent Recall of JAKO Sports Bags, Backpacks in Ireland Due to Cancer Risk
Hundreds of sports bags, personal bags, and backpacks sold in Ireland have been recalled after safety checks revealed the presence of potentially carcinogenic chemicals. The recall, initiated by JAKO AG and confirmed by Ireland’s Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), affects over 200 items sold within the country.
Chemical Concerns and Health Risks
The affected products contain high levels of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) related substances. According to the CCPC, PFOAs are suspected carcinogens and pose a risk to the environment. The Irish Mirror first reported on the recall, highlighting the potential health implications.
Affected Products and Item Numbers
The recall encompasses all bags with the following item numbers, regardless of color, production date, or place of purchase:
- 1721 Toiletry Bag Challenge
- 1821 Backpack Challenge
- 1921 Sports Bag Challenge
- 2021 Sports Bag Challenge with Bottom Compartment
The CCPC advises consumers to immediately stop using any of these products.
Return and Refund Process
JAKO AG is offering customers a free return label to either receive a replacement product of equal value or a full refund of the purchase price. CorkBeo reports that returned items will be inspected and disposed of properly.
Company Statement
JAKO AG stated that the recall is a precautionary measure following internal quality and safety checks. “The safety of our products is our top priority,” a spokesperson said. “As part of our ongoing quality and safety checks, we have determined that the bags, backpacks, and toiletries bags from the Teamline CHALLENGE range do not meet our high safety standards.”
Consumer Advice
The CCPC urges customers who purchased any of the affected products to identify them by their item number and return them to JAKO. Dublin Live provides further details on the recall process.
