Ireland Condemns US Sanctions on International Criminal Court

Ireland has joined nearly 80 other countries in condemning the sanctions imposed by US President Donald Trump on the International Criminal Court (ICC). The move, which accuses the ICC of targeting the US and its ally Israel, has been widely criticized as a threat to international justice.

Trump’s Executive Order and Ireland’s Response

On Thursday, President Trump signed an executive order claiming the ICC had engaged in “illegitimate and baseless actions” against the US and Israel. The order specifically cited “baseless” arrest warrants issued for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

However, Taoiseach Micheál Martin urged for the sanctions to be withdrawn on Friday, while Tánaiste Simon Harris is understood to support a joint international statement criticizing the US president’s actions.

A senior Government source emphasized the importance of allowing the ICC to operate independently and impartially.

ICC and International Criticism

It is understood that Ireland will be one of 76 countries publicly condemning the US move. Mr. Harris expressed deep concern over President Trump’s decision and agreed to Ireland supporting the international statement criticizing the sanctions on the ICC.

The Taoiseach echoed this sentiment, stating, “Ireland has been a strong supporter of the international courts system and international humanitarian law. … I don’t believe [ICC chief prosecutor Karim Khan] has any agenda against Israel or against the US.” He appealed for the sanctions to be rescinded, emphasizing the need for international rule of law.

Potential Consequences of Sanctions

President Trump’s order states that the US will impose “tangible and significant consequences” on those responsible for the ICC’s “transgressions.” These may include blocking property and assets, denying entry to the US for ICC officials, employees, and relatives.

Support International Justice

The actions taken by the US raise serious questions about the future of international justice. It is crucial that the international community continues to support the work of the ICC and upholds the principles of accountability and the rule of law.
