Israel’s Strikes on Iran: Damaging Missile Capabilities and Air Defenses

In response to a massive Iranian ballistic missile attack on October 1st, Israel launched retaliatory strikes on key military sites across Iran on October 26th. While Iran quickly downplayed the impact of the attacks, satellite imagery suggests a significant blow to Iran’s military capabilities.

Weakening Iran’s Missile Arsenal

Analysts indicate that Israel targeted Iran’s production of solid-propellant ballistic missiles, primarily those used in the October 1st assault. Fabian Hinz of the International Institute for Strategic Studies highlights that these missiles pose a significant threat due to their rapid deployment and ability to launch volleys in quick succession. The targets included the Parchin military complex, Khojir military base, Shahrud missile site, and a factory in the Shamsabad Industrial Zone.

Jeremy Binnie, a Middle East defense specialist at Janes, notes that the full extent of the damage remains unclear, but Israel likely aimed to disrupt Iran’s ability to sustain long-range missile exchanges. “The Israelis probably don’t know precisely how many ballistic missiles [Iran] has with the requisite range, but have tried to reduce its ability to replenish its stockpile,” Binnie explained.

Targeting Defensive Systems

Beyond its focus on offensive capabilities, Israel’s strikes also targeted Iran’s air defense systems. Unconfirmed reports suggest the destruction of three Russian-made S-300 systems, Iran’s most formidable air defense. Experts emphasize this as a strategic move, increasing Israel’s freedom of operation in future engagements.

Satellite images further reveal damage to at least two radar systems, one in Ilam Province and another in Khuzestan Province. These radar systems are critical components of Iran’s early warning system, and their disruption significantly weakens Iran’s ability to defend against air attacks. Some reports, citing U.S. defense officials, suggest these radars also played a role in tracking ballistic missile trajectories, potentially explaining Iran’s relatively high missile accuracy.

Repercussions and Future Implications

While Iran considers retaliatory measures, the extent of the damage to its offensive and defensive capabilities raises questions about its capacity for a large-scale response. The deployment of a U.S. THAAD anti-missile system to Israel further strengthens Israel’s defensive posture. Media reports suggest Iran may attempt to utilize its proxy forces in Iraq to launch an attack on Israel, potentially seeking to mitigate Israeli retaliation through these proxies.

The situation remains volatile. Stay tuned for further developments in this unfolding crisis.
