Saints Turn to Jake Haener at Quarterback

The New Orleans Saints are making a change at quarterback for Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders.

According to NFL Insider Nick Underhill of NewOrleans.Football, the Saints will start rookie Jake Haener against Washington. Interim coach Darren Rizzi informed the quarterbacks room of the decision on Thursday.

This move comes as starter Derek Carr deals with a left hand injury that could potentially end his season.

Recall of Haener’s Performance

Interestingly, this decision to go with Haener instead of fellow backup Spencer Rattler comes as a surprise to some. When Carr initially suffered an oblique injury earlier this season, the Saints opted for Rattler over Haener, who was the actual No. 2 on the depth chart at the time. Rattler struggled in his three starts under former head coach Dennis Allen, posting a 0-3 record.

Haener, a fourth-round pick in the 2023 NFL draft, has yet to make a regular-season start. He has seen action in seven games this season, completing 14 of 29 passes for 177 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions.

With Haener taking the starting reigns, Rattler will be his backup, and veteran Ben DiNucci remains on the practice squad after recently signing with the team.

Stay Tuned

With the Saints looking to regroup after Carr’s potential season-ending injury, all eyes will be on Jake Haener as he steps into the starting role. Will he be able to lead the Saints to a win against the Commanders? Tune in Sunday to find out!
