Caoimhín Kelleher Hands Arne Slot a Goalkeeping Dilemma

Caoimhín Kelleher is making a strong case for Liverpool’s number one spot with another impressive performance between the sticks. The Cork native, deputizing for the injured Alisson Becker, helped secure a vital 1-0 victory away at RB Leipzig in the Champions League.

It was Kelleher’s fourth appearance of the season and his resurgence comes at a timely moment. Alisson’s injury woes mean Kelleher is gaining valuable experience, silencing any doubts about Liverpool’s defensive capabilities.

“All I can do is play well when I get the chance and give the manager something to think about,” Kelleher said after the match.

“Most importantly is that I do well when I do get the opportunities and show what I’m about. One of the lads asked me before the game when was my last Champions League game. I think it was maybe three years ago. It’s special to be back in this tournament and to get the clean sheet was nice.”

Scales Shines for Celtic Despite Draw

Meanwhile, another Irish player making waves in Europe is Liam Scales. The Celtic defender put in a commanding performance in their goalless draw against Atalanta in the Champions League.

“When you go back to when Scales was first in the team, he was in because a set of circumstances went his way,” RTÉ Sport pundit Richie Sadlier commented.

“Now, his status within that dressing room, to get Champions League Player of the Match awards on the back of a month where he’s started twice for his country, we’re hoping the partnership with Nathan Collins will become something that we can bank on.”

Scales’s form has been a highlight of Celtic’s Champions League campaign so far. Another Irish player, Adam Idah, also enjoyed his first Champions League start against the Italians, while fellow Irishman and captain Nathan Collins showed his usual strength at the back.

Celtic are currently competing with Liverpool, Aston Villa, and Manchester City for the top spots in the Champions League table.
