Khamenei Defiant Amidst US Pressure and Negotiations

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s Supreme Leader, has responded defiantly to recent remarks by US President Donald Trump, asserting that the Islamic Republic has withstood American efforts to dismantle it for 47 years and will continue to do so. This exchange of rhetoric occurs as new negotiations, mediated by Oman, are underway in Geneva.

Khamenei’s Response to Trump

Khamenei stated that Trump’s admission of America’s inability to eliminate the Islamic Republic over nearly five decades is a “good admission.” He further declared, “You, too, will not be able to do this.” This response followed Trump’s call for regime change in Iran, which he described as “the best thing that could happen.”

Military Strength and Threats

Addressing Trump’s claims of American military superiority, Khamenei cautioned that even “the strongest army in the world may at times receive such a slap that it cannot rise.” He specifically referenced the deployment of a US aircraft carrier toward Iran, stating, “an aircraft carrier is a dangerous device, but more dangerous than the carrier is the weapon that can send it to the bottom of the sea.”

January Protests and Martyrs

Khamenei also addressed the January protests in Iran, framing those killed as martyrs although differentiating between groups. He categorized the deceased as security forces, bystanders, and “misled participants,” excluding “instigators of sedition and the ringleaders and those who took money and weapons from the enemy.” He offered prayers for the “misled participants,” characterizing the uprising as an enemy-driven plot rather than a domestic protest movement.

Ongoing Negotiations

These statements were made amidst a new round of negotiations mediated by Oman in Geneva, signaling continued diplomatic efforts alongside heightened tensions between Tehran, and Washington.
