The Portland Pilots men’s tennis team suffered a tough 6-1 defeat at the hands of the undefeated Washington Huskies on February 16, 2025, at the Nordstrom Tennis Center in Seattle. Despite the final score, the Pilots showcased resilience and determination throughout the match, earning praise from head coach Aaron Gross.

The Huskies dominated in doubles, securing the doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Washington’s top-ranked singles players continued their dominance, winning their respective matches in straight sets, highlighting the Huskies’ consistent performance.

However, freshman Lucas Kimelman emerged as a bright spot for the Pilots, securing a hard-fought three-set victory at the No. 5 singles position. This triumph against Ivan Sodan showcased Kimelman’s resilience and skill, providing a moment of inspiration for the team.

Coach Gross acknowledged Kimelman’s impressive performance, stating, “Lucas’ win was a fantastic highlight for us. It shows the kind of heart and determination we have on this team. When someone like Lucas pulls off a win in a tough three-set match, it certainly lifts everyone’s spirits. It sends a message that even against tough opponents, we can find success,”

While the Huskies maintained control throughout the match, Coach Gross emphasized the valuable lessons learned, stating, “We learn from every match, win or lose, and we’ll focus on sharpening our strengths before our next home game against New Mexico.”

The Pilots will look to bounce back from this setback when they host New Mexico at the Louisiana-Pacific Tennis Center on Monday at 11 a.m. The team’s resilience and determination shown against Washington provide a foundation for future success.

“We want to continue improving as a team,” said Logyn Sanders, a sophomore standout for the Pilots. “We want to be playing our best tennis towards the end of the season. We know we have potential, and we’re excited to see what we can accomplish together.”

The Pilots’ upcoming home match against New Mexico serves as an important opportunity for the team to showcase its growth and determination in front of their home crowd.
