Australian Marathon Team Set for Tokyo World Athletics Championships
The Australian athletics team is sharpening its focus for the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September, with the recent announcement of marathon selections. A compelling mix of seasoned campaigners adn emerging talent will represent the nation on the world stage.
Klein Returns, Pompeani Opts for Home Soil
Marathoner sarah Klein, representing Victoria, will return to the World Athletics Championships a full ten years after her initial appearance. This selection marks a notable moment for the 40-year-old athlete, demonstrating her enduring commitment and capability within the sport. Her inclusion is a testament to her dedication, consistent performance, and unwavering professionalism. Notably, Klein previously achieved a commendable 14th place at the Eugene Championships, and team officials are optimistic about her potential in Tokyo.
The team has also seen a shift in plans with Leanne Pompeani’s decision to prioritize the sydney marathon. Andrew Faichney, Australian Athletics General manager – High Performance, acknowledged and respected Pompeani’s choice, recognizing the Sydney Marathon’s growing stature as a world-class event. The Sydney Marathon, now considered among the most prestigious marathons globally, offers a compelling alternative for athletes seeking a challenging race closer to home. In 2024, the Sydney Marathon attracted over 18,000 participants, showcasing its increasing popularity and competitive field.
The Tokyo Course: A Test of Endurance
The marathon course in Tokyo promises a demanding yet visually stunning experience for athletes.Beginning at the Japan National Stadium, the race will unfold over two laps of a 13-kilometre circuit, guiding runners through iconic Tokyo districts like Akihabara, Nihonbashi, and Ginza. The route also incorporates the scenic Imperial Palace area and passes by Tokyo Station.
A particularly challenging segment awaits runners between the 38-40 kilometre mark – a significant climb that is expected to be a decisive factor in determining final standings. This uphill stretch will require substantial reserves of energy and strategic pacing to navigate successfully. The Women’s Marathon is scheduled for september 14th, with the Men’s race following on September 15th, both commencing at 8:00 am local time.
