Lando Norris is under increasing pressure from McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri and the Brit’s struggles could have deeper ramifications than potentially losing an F1 world title fight.

It all started well with victory in the season-opening race in Melbourne, but since then some key Norris mistakes, coupled with some sensational driving from Aussie youngster Piastri, have turned the tables.
Piastri has taken out three of the past four Grands Prix to lead the standings on 99 points, ahead of Norris (89 points) and Verstappen (87).
Question marks over Norris’ mental strength in such a cutthroat sport have been doing the rounds for some time, with Red Bull consultant Helmut Marko stating in October last year his team “knows Norris has some mental weaknesses”.
The growing perception around Norris and his ability to handle pressure was amplified when he said he had “been off it all weekend” and felt “clueless on track” and needed “a big reset” after qualifying at the previous Bahrain GP.
Norris’ recent struggles then hit a new low when he crashed in qualifying for the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix and started 10th on the grid.
Speaking on the Backstage Boxengasse podcast, former F1 star Ralf Schumacher said the crash in Saudi Arabia was a concerning sign for Norris.
But the six-time F1 race winner added Norris’ current struggles could have bigger ramifications for his future in the sport.
“He made that mistake, but in my opinion, he wanted it too much,” Schumacher said.
“Or rather, he had understeer at that point because he didn’t reach the apex.
“That can happen, but of course, that shouldn’t happen when you’re racing for the world championship.
“No question about it, you have to take a closer look at that. Of course, we don’t see the data, but yes, it looks like a mistake on his part.
“That shouldn’t happen when you’re racing for the world championship. But, one thing is also clear, he already knows what’s going on, right?
“And he knows that if he doesn’t perform this year, it will be difficult for him (to work with) other teams at some point.”
Schumacher was referring to the fact that once an F1 team senses a driver has lost his nerve, a situation that appeared to plague Daniel Ricciardo late in his career on the grid, they become extremely reluctant to move forward with them.
“You know how it is in the paddock,” Schumacher added.
“Once they think that you’re a rubbish driver or not mentally strong enough to become world champion, then of course, you no longer have access to the other top teams.”
In a long season, Norris of course has plenty of time to turn his form around and challenge for his first title in 2025.
At the time of writing, the 25-year-old remains level in the betting markets with Piastri as the favourite for this year’s crown.
But Norris’ issues come as Piastri is showing incredible fortitude in his bid for a first world title.
Alan Jones, the last Australian to win an F1 world championship, is backing his compatriot to win the title as soon as this year.
Jones, who took out the championship back in 1980, also weighed into the Norris talk, calling the Englishman “weak”.
“He is without a doubt a future world champion,” Jones told The Back Page on Fox Sports of Piastri.
“He’s come out of almost nowhere and he’s got all the attributes that you need to be a world champion.
“Like any Aussie, it’s been fantastic. If you can tune into any sporting event and there’s an Aussie who’s a frontrunner or has a chance at achieving victory, it just makes it that much more interesting for you.”
Speaking about Norris, Jones said: “The first person you’ve got to beat is your teammate.
“He (Piastri) can do it (win the F1 title) this year, no question. At the end of the day, his teammate is weak.
“His teammate is quite quick, there’s no doubt about that. But mentally, I think he’s quite a weak person.
“He’s coming out with all this nonsense that he’s got a bit of a mental thing, he’s dwelling on some of the problems he’s had rather than the positives.
“When they start talking all that nonsense, you know you’ve got them.”
