Landon Donovan Opens Up About Depression and Finding Peace After Soccer Career
Landon Donovan, one of the most recognizable American men’s soccer players, has detailed his struggles with depression and how he redefined success in his fresh memoir, “Landon: A Memoir,” released on Tuesday. Donovan’s career included participation in the 2002 World Cup, where the team reached the quarterfinals, and a pivotal goal in the 2010 World Cup that helped the U.S. Advance from the group stage.
Experiences with Depression
Donovan described experiencing two distinct forms of depression. He explained that he has dealt with a low-level, underlying depression throughout his life, which he currently manages. However, he also experienced three severe depressive episodes lasting weeks, characterized by an inability to obtain out of bed, loss of appetite, and an overwhelming feeling of sadness.
“It is a horrible feeling,” Donovan said, describing the sensation as a “massive blanket on top of you that you can’t get off.”
Strategies for Managing Mental Health
The former soccer star has found strategies to cope with these moods, including therapy. He outlined what he calls the “three Ms” that have helped him: medication, meditation, and the support of his mother. He stated he has been able to avoid a major depressive episode for a long time, attributing this to consistent medication and meditation, along with exercise.
Challenges After the 2006 World Cup
Donovan’s struggles began after the 2006 World Cup, where he failed to score or provide assists for the team, leading to criticism from the media. He was also left off the roster for the 2008 Olympics.
Fortunate Timing with Social Media
Donovan expressed gratitude that social media was not prevalent during the peak of the criticism he faced. He believes the constant scrutiny and negativity of social media would have exacerbated his struggles. He acknowledged the difficulties faced by public figures today who are subjected to online hatred and criticism, noting that it has sadly taken many lives.
Redefining Success
Donovan’s definition of success has evolved. He now finds fulfillment in peace, spending time with his children and wife, traveling, and playing golf. He reflected on how far he’s come, from growing up in a 900-square-foot home to staying in luxury hotels.
The Importance of Perspective
The passing of his father in December provided a profound perspective on what truly matters. He realized that when his time comes, the things he values most will be those that bring him peace. He now focuses his energy and effort on those pursuits.
