The Return of Grand Celebrations: How the Wedding Industry Bounced Back
After a period of scaled-back gatherings due to the pandemic, the wedding industry is experiencing a resurgence of large, elaborate celebrations. While intimate weddings gained popularity during times of restriction, couples are now embracing the opportunity to host more expansive events, though with a shift away from traditional formats.
The Pandemic’s Impact and Recovery
The COVID-19 pandemic brought the wedding industry to a near standstill. Wedding planner Martina O’Riordan, based in Tipperary and vice chair of the Irish Wedding Professionals Association, described the period as “massive,” marked by constant rescheduling and uncertainty. Restrictions on gatherings, venue closures, and limitations on activities like live music and dancing forced couples to drastically alter their plans. At one point, guest lists were capped at just six people. Irish Independent
O’Riordan noted the logistical challenges of managing weddings during this time, with each event potentially involving 10 to 15 suppliers and frequent date changes due to evolving public health guidelines.
A Shift in Wedding Styles
The current trend indicates a move away from the conventional “beef or salmon?” wedding format. Couples are increasingly seeking unique and personalized experiences for their guests. An example of this shift is the recent large Italian wedding of Irish bride Ellie Connolly and Ben Skeel, photographed by Cinzia Bruschini. Irish Independent
Industry Outlook
Wedding planner Martina O’Riordan confirms that “big weddings are definitely back.” Facebook This signals a positive outlook for the wedding industry as it continues to recover and adapt to evolving preferences.
