Culbreath Caps Leverkusen Win, Boosts Title Hopes

German-American winger Montrell Culbreath scored on his senior debut to secure Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-1 win over Leipzig on Saturday, firmly re-establishing Leverkusen as a Bundesliga title contender.

The 18-year-old Culbreath, eligible for both Germany and the United states at the youth level, entered the match in the 77th minute. As Leipzig pressed for an equalizer, Culbreath broke away in stoppage time and powerfully struck the ball into the top-left corner, celebrating with open arms.

Culbreath then faced a tense wait as VAR reviewed Leipzig’s claim of a handball during a prior play at the opposite end of the field.

Leverkusen will enter the winter break in third place, a remarkable turnaround after a turbulent start to the season. The club initially faced chaos when Erik ten Hag was dismissed as coach after just three games. As then,Kasper hjulmand has guided the team to nine wins in 13 Bundesliga matches.

Leverkusen started strongly, but Leipzig took the lead through Xaver Schlager’s low shot from the edge of the box, capitalizing on a slow defensive response to a throw-in.

Martin terrier quickly equalized with a header from Arthur’s cross, and Patrik Schick put Leverkusen ahead just before halftime, skillfully evading a defender and chipping the ball over the goalkeeper.

Despite the absence of key players – left back Alejandro Grimaldo, center back edmond Tapsoba, and attacking midfielder Ibrahim Maza – due to injury or participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, Leverkusen maintained control and secured the victory, handing Leipzig their first home loss of the season.
